Today is our two-year anniversary.
As the sun is rising this morning here in Austin, I can’t help but think about all that’s happened in the two years since Rebecca and I got married, and what an incredible journey God has our family on.
Two years ago this morning, we were in Montana getting ready for our wedding. By the late afternoon, we would be standing together in a timber frame pavilion, holding hands and surrounded by hundreds of friends, and I would give Rebecca a different kind of a scare when I dropped her hand and walked away.
I wanted to make our vows special. And for her and I, and Indiana, and all of us who were there… to have something extra special, to remember that extra special day.
And we do.
First thing this morning, I pulled this video up and as I watched Rebecca and I saying ‘I do’, my first thought was… boy, she really does.
It has not been an easy last couple of years for her. Not by a long shot. I’m not sure Rebecca knew all that she was signing up for. Honestly, neither did I. Little did we know, we were about to go an hair-raising adventure… that continues right up to this very moment.
But through it all, Rebecca has stayed steady as a rock. No matter what’s thrown at her… she never stops loving and giving to me, to Indiana, and to others around us. It’s nothing short of incredible, this woman I married. Every day, I’m reminded more and more just what a lucky man I am.
And so, this post and this story isn’t about Indiana or surgeries or hospitals, but it is about a special heart just the same.
Since all of this started a few weeks, Rebecca'’s not left Indy’s side. She’s been a round-the-clock nurse here in the hospital, helping the nurses, playing games, coloring, doing math problems, reading to her, going for long hallway walks, changing the bedding, taking her the bathroom, giving her baths (and washing her hair in the little caps they have), and a hundred other little things and ways she finds to love our little girl, and make her feel comfortable in a very uncomfortable situation.
And she still finds time to leave little notes for me to find.
Last night just before sunset here at the hospital, knowing what day today was, we took a walk out the big doors to what they call the ‘healing garden’ and picked some flowers for Mama.
And Indy was excited to take a picture for us to have to remember our special day.
And now here it is July 14th.
It’s still early morning here in Austin and both the girls are still sleeping. Indy in her hospital bed, and Rebe on the couch beside her. And I’m here doing what I do, sitting with a cup of coffee, writing… processing what I’m feeling and all that’s happening - through my fingers and thoughts and through a few pictures, and this blog.
Thinking about how standing at an alter and saying I Do, and actually really doing aren’t the same thing. And how every day God gives each of us an opportunity to express the vows we made to each other in ways, other than just words.
We’re not sure yet exactly what the day holds. Maybe we’ll be back having a meal at home in Waco this evening, or then again, maybe we’ll be celebrating with another tray of food from the cafeteria and night of Uno. But no matter what the day holds, it’s still a special one, mostly because we’re all here together.
And so, even when it’s not what we had in mind… this is the day the Lord has made, and so, let’s all rejoice and be glad in it.
PS… in case you’ve never seen the little behind-the-scenes video and story I made a couple of weeks after our wedding, it’s pretty neat…
